Our Giving Tuesday 2021 Campaign What would the world be like without marine scientists? provided a closer look into how marine scientists positively affect our everyday lives. From the role marine scientists play in hurricane and weather prediction, medicine development and coastline protection to helping supply chains and shipping efficiencies, we highlighted the importance of this career path while engaging a global audience.
On Tuesday, November 30, this year's global day of giving, we received outstanding support and raised over$18,000! These contributions will help us make a significant impact in 2022 and continue to support marine science research and fieldwork.
ANGARI PRESIDENT RECAPS AN EXCITING 2021
We hope you've enjoyed our "Staying Current" video series launched earlier this year. These short videos are designed to provide a quick ANGARI Foundation update to keep our friends and supporters 'in the know.'
We're excited to share with you our final update of 2021, including reporting on a successful year as we also look forward to what's to come in 2022.
We're thrilled to have been able to return to the water this year, after a very limited 2020 due to COVID-19. This year we worked locally off the east coast of Florida and traveled to The Bahamas, Florida Keys, Dry Tortugas and Gulf of Mexico. In November we celebrated the completion of our 42nd expedition.
We are currently wrapping up a few maintenance projects and getting some much needed rest in preparation for a busy 2022 expedition schedule.
LAGOON DRIFT CARD STUDY BACK IN ACTION
We're pleased to have re-initiated our Lagoon Drift citizen science investigation of marine debris motion in our region!
On November 6th, volunteers and partners, including Manatee Lagoon, Friends of Manatee Lagoon, Palm Beach Day Academy, FDEP Indian River Lagoon Aquatic Preserves, FL Sea Grant, Manatee Observation & Education Center, Ocean Research & Conservation Assoc. and the Environmental Studies Council deployed eco-friendly drift cards around the Lake Worth and Indian River Lagoons for our 6th experiment.
Reports are rolling in and we want to thank our partners and communities for making this program possible! Stay tuned here for updates and future drifts.
RETURN TO COMMUNITY EVENTS WITH LAGOONFEST
With in-person outreach events starting back up again, we were excited to dust off our exhibiting materials to participate in LagoonFest 2021!
We joined friends and colleagues in this annual outdoor celebration of our urban estuary, the Lake Worth Lagoon. We spoke with visitors about our programs, including Lagoon Drift, and culminated the event with the release of drift cards from sites around the lagoon. Shout out to the teachers and students of Palm Beach Day Academy for manning the deployment from the WPB public dock!
OCEAN EXPERT EXCHANGE SERIES CONTINUES
We and our partners at the UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute had another awesome semester of Ocean Expert Exchange webinars! Hundreds of participants of all ages joined us as Dr. Lisa Krimsky discussed Florida's red tide, Dr. Chelsea Bennice talked about her octopus fieldwork and Dr. Danielle Ingle shared stories told by manatee bones.
Stay tuned for our spring lineup, which includes awesome topics like manta rays! Upcoming event info, recorded webinars and related educational resources can be found on our program page.
WARM WELCOME FOR OUR NEWEST INTERN
Please help us extend a warm welcome to our newest intern Lydia Pleasants!
Lydia's past education and experience in conservation biology, marine science, environmental writing, SCUBA diving and yachting makes her a great addition to the ANGARI team and R/V ANGARI crew.
Originally from upstate New York, Lydia attended the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. She graduated in 2020 with a B.S. in Conservation Biology and minors in Marine Science and Environmental Writing.
