In November our team participated in the 2022 Lake Worth Lagoon Science Symposium. The conference brought together stakeholders from around the region to discuss the lagoon, its watershed and all of the factors that influence the health, management and restoration of this important estuary. The daylong event included over 60 talks and poster presentations sharing research studies, management plans and community education programs.
ANGARI's Director of Science Education and Advancement Amanda Waite, Ph.D., gave a talk about the ongoing efforts of our Lagoon Drift citizen science project, and Program Coordinator Lydia Pleasants shared the project's results to date during the poster session. We want to extend a huge thank you to Palm Beach County ERM for organizing the event and bringing together colleagues and collaborators from around the state and beyond.
GIVING TUESDAY RAISES FUNDS FOR EDUCATION
We are thrilled to announce another successful Giving Tuesday! This year's campaign surpassed its goal, raising a total of $22,100!
These funds will make an immediate impact on ANGARI Education programs. Planning for next year's STEM and education initiatives is underway, including youth expeditions, classroom visits, citizen science projects, webinars, community events and more!
Help us connect more people to the ocean in 2023, and support us today!
CELEBRATING LAGOONFEST WITH SHINING A LIGHT
T.A. Walker of WPTV's Shining A Light joined us live onboard R/V ANGARI ahead of this year's LagoonFest, an annual celebration of the Lake Worth Lagoon. ANGARI President Angela Rosenberg and PBC ERM's Benji Studt talked about the local ecosystem and shared the activities that would be featured during LagoonFest, including mock shark workups by COE: Sharks Lead Scientist Erin Spencer.
Days later during the LagoonFest event, hundreds of visitors toured the research vessel, met scientists and learned more about shark research in our local waters.
RESEARCH VESSEL CONCLUDES THIS YEAR'S EXPEDITION SCHEDULE WITH STUDENTS ONBOARD
It's been a fantastic year for shark research and education onboard R/V ANGARI, and we could not be happier to have concluded our year with several COE: Sharks expeditions in collaboration with Florida International University.
In this program's inaugural year, we welcomed aboard 83 students and 41 educators to work alongside scientists and participate in hands-on research. Big thank you to this year's Lead Scientists Erin Spencer and Laura García Barcia.
With the generous support of Nautical Ventures, we were able to acquire and equip the Whaly with a 60hp Yamaha outboard engine, Garmin GPS, VHF radio and AIS. The vessel offers generous deck space for diving and research equipment and has an opening bow door for easy loading and boarding.
The Whaly will be used as a support vessel and travel with R/V ANGARI during expeditions as well as a solo workboat for local projects in Palm Beach County and South Florida.
8TH LAGOON DRIFT EXPERIMENT UNDERWAY
On November 11th, eco-friendly wooden drift cards were released into the Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway as part of our Lagoon Drift citizen science study looking at the motion of water and marine debris in regional waterways.
Reports have been rolling in and we want to thank all of the participating citizen scientists, including volunteers from Friends of Manatee Lagoon and Palm Beach Day Academy who decorated and deployed cards for this experiment! Learn more on our program page and check out the Palm Beach Daily News coverage.
AN EXCITING SEMESTER OF IN-PERSON SCHOOL VISITS
Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks Lead Scientist Erin Spencer of Florida International University shared shark research and conservation methods with the Jupiter Community High School, Palm Beach Central High School, Independence Middle School and Roosevelt Middle School communities.
Our education team also visited Palm Beach Day Academy and Roosevelt Middle to talk about ocean currents and the methods used to study them while engaging them in Lagoon Drift.
FALL OCEAN EXPERT EXCHANGE WEBINARS WRAP UP
We were pleased to be joined by 1300+ audience members for our Ocean Expert Exchange livestreams with UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute this semester!
From learning about "shark fitbits" with FIU's Erin Spencer, to open source reef research tools with Nate Formel of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and green infrastructure with Dr. Kelly Kibler of University of Central Florida, there was something for everyone. Event recordings and related educational resources are available via our program page - stay tuned for our spring schedule!
