CAPTAIN ANGELA JOINS DIVERSIFIED GAME PODCAST TO TALK ABOUT PASSION, CAREERS AND ANGARI

Captain Angela Rosenberg was invited to participate in an episode of the DIVERSIFIED GAME podcast. Kellen Coleman joined Angela aboard R/V ANGARI for a deep dive into her past experiences, current endeavors and future plans. After a vessel tour, Kellen sat down with Angela to discuss the ANGARI mission, what we do, how we do it and what it means to be a marine scientist. Listen to the podcast today!

We want to extend a huge thank you to Kellen for choosing Angela and ANGARI Foundation to feature this Spring.

NOAA MONITORS CORAL REEFS IN DRY TORTUGAS

NOAA AOML scientist collects high resolution photos for a photogrammetry project.

After 3 years, NOAA AOML researchers returned to the Dry Tortugas to collect data and samples as part of their ongoing National Coral Reef Monitoring Program.

A primary goal of this expedition was to maintain ongoing, long term monitoring of reefs within and just outside Dry Tortugas National Park. Using SCUBA, divers surveyed and assessed calcification, bioerosion, and biodiversity at several sites over the 5-day expedition.

Stay tuned for the full details and photos in the upcoming expedition webpage.

PAVING THE WAY FOR FUTURE OCEANOGRAPHERS

For the seventh year we welcomed aboard 30 inquisitive young scientists and their mentors for the University of South Florida (USF) College of Marine Science’s Oceanography Camp Especially for Girls (OCG). The campers had the opportunity to gain real-world experience in oceanography while developing problem solving, communication, teamwork and leadership skills. During the camp, the participants executed a multitude of research methods at 3 different sites throughout Tampa Bay and will use the data collected as part of their final project.

WRAPPING UP A SHARKY SPRING WITH FIU & ELMS

Florida International University scientists and a student measure a nurse shark off R/V ANGARI's stern during a Coastal Ocean Explorers Expedition.

We rounded out our semester of shark research expeditions onboard R/V ANGARI on a high note! On April 10th Eagles Landing Middle School joined us for our final Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks expedition of the spring, where they successfully caught, studied and tagged a nurse shark!

Then on April 11-12th, we welcomed aboard instructors and students from Florida International University's Shark Handling Workshop for hands-on instruction and training where 4 more nurse sharks were worked up. To learn more about the expeditions, go here.

RESEARCHERS COLLECT SARGASSUM SAMPLES TO EXAMINE LOCAL IMPACTS IN FLORIDA

The Lapointe HAB Lab from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University joined us onboard R/V ANGARI to collect samples off the Florida coast.

Sargassum macroalgae provides a critical nursery habitat for many species. However, an inundation of Sargassum can create harmful algal blooms, negatively impacting the coastal ecosystem, economy and human health.

Led by Rachel Brewton, Ph.D., the team collected water and Sargassum samples over 2 days, covering nearly 130 nautical miles. The samples will be analyzed back in their laboratory to examine biochemical and nutrient compositions.

A SUCCESSFUL 11th LAGOON DRIFT EXPERIMENT

ANGARI Foundation Lagoon Drift Spring Experiment Card Match

In April we deployed our eco-friendly purple drift cards into the Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway as part of our 11th citizen science experiment in our Lagoon Drift study.

Out of the 240 cards that were deployed, we have had an amazing 84 cards or 35% reported, which is far above average for studies of this nature. We want to thank all the citizen scientists involved as every reported card helps us better understand pollutant motion in our waters. Click here to read the full after-action report for this experiment.

A BUSY APRIL FOR THE OUTREACH TEAM

April was a busy month for the outreach team. We attended multiple events including Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens' Earth Day, Palm Beach Atlantic University Earth Day Fair and FMSEA!

Laura and the team loved interacting with many different audiences, including elementary school students, college students, teachers and members of the public. Engaging the community with Lagoon Drift card decorating, sharing upcoming opportunities and promoting our educational programs was enjoyed by everyone involved!
