RESEARCHERS REVISIT BAHAMAS TO MONITOR CORAL DISEASE & REEF RECOVERY
After nearly a year-and-a-half hiatus due to COVID-19, Perry Institute for Marine Science returned to the northern Bahamas to survey reefs around Grand Bahama Island and the Abaco Island chain. Researchers assessed the spread of stony coral tissue loss disease on Bahamas reefs and the recovery of coral reefs post Hurricane Dorian.
During the 16-day expedition onboard R/V ANGARI the team circumnavigated Grand Bahama Island and Abaco and evaluated 25 sites, completing 98 benthic surveys, 59 coral surveys and 154 fish surveys in total. Photogrammetry was also used to image and map the reefs at each site.
