We had a super successful semester of Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks expeditions with our partner scientists from Florida International University and six Palm Beach County middle and high schools! We want to thank the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back and Society for Science STEM Action grant programs for supporting these hands-on educational opportunities.

Know a group of youth interested in their own student expedition? Applications are open for the 2025-26 school year so visit our COE webpage and apply today!

FIU STUDENTS PUT SHARK HANDLING SKILLS TO TEST

Led by shark behavioral ecologist Yannis Papastamatiou and our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program lead scientist Will Sample, students in Florida International University's Shark Handling course spent a day onboard R/V ANGARI honing their field research skills.

During their expedition offshore Palm Beach County, the workshop participants caught, collected data from and released six sharks of four different species. Read more about their productive day of shark research and early career scientist training on the Expedition 94 webpage.

ONE LIVE WEBINAR LEFT IN OUR SPRING OEE SERIES

We've had an engaging semester of Ocean Expert Exchange webinars with our partners at the UF Thompson Earth Systems Institute learning about everything from nudibranchs to American crocodiles, as we explore marine careers.

Just one event remains in our spring lineup. On April 10th, we will be joined by Lindy Knowles of the Bahamas National Trust who will share his work to establish, expand and manage Marine Protected Areas. For event details and registration, as well as recordings and resources from past webinars, visit our OEE webpage.

GET READY TO BE A LAGOON DRIFT CITIZEN SCIENTIST

We're gearing up for the 13th experiment in our long-term Lagoon Drift Card Study. On April 14th, we will deploy 280 eco-friendly wooden drift cards into the Lake Worth Lagoon and Intracoastal Waterway.

This is where you come in! Once these pink cards are in the water, you can be a citizen scientist by looking for, recovering, keeping and reporting any drift cards you find. We will use the important drift card data you report to us to examine the motion of marine debris in and around our local waterways. Learn more about the study on our Lagoon Drift webpage.

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY IN MARINE SCIENCE

Quarterly Compass_Outreach

Our Education Team and volunteers have been out and about engaging audiences of all ages at recent outreach events.

Their first stop was Manatee Lagoon's ManateeFest, where they shared our COE: Sharks program. Everyone was excited to get the chance to participate in a mock shark workup and learn all about these apex predators. Next stop was Nature Fest at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, and the team loved sharing our Lagoon Drift study and watching many new citizen scientists channel their inner artist while decorating drift cards!
