ANGARI SHARES LAGOON DRIFT WITH U.S. COAST GUARD AUXILIARY FLOTILLAS

USCG Auxiliary Flotillas

We've been busy establishing new and growing existing partnerships with our local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas. Our Community Outreach Programs & Education Manager Laura Jessop was invited to present at their regional meeting about Lagoon Drift. She has since been to two additional Flotilla meetings and engaged their members, who were excited to learn about how we use citizen science to study the movement of water and pollutants within our waterways. We look forward to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary participating in this fall's Lagoon Drift experiment.

A FINTASTIC FALL FOR COASTAL OCEAN EXPLORERS

Our fall Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks educational programming got underway with visits to Jupiter Community High School and Independence Middle School.

Then in September we set sail for science at sea with students from Eagles Landing Middle School and JCHS's Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. Expedition participants explored marine science firsthand, while working with our partner scientists from Florida International University to study sharks and other marine life off Palm Beach County. More expeditions coming!

SUCCESSFUL SEA TURTLE RELEASES WITH JOHN D. MACARTHUR BEACH STATE PARK

MacArthur Beach State Park Loggerhead Sea Turtle Release

In August, park rangers from John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, staff members from Friends of MacArthur Beach State Park and guests boarded R/V ANGARI with two female loggerhead sea turtles – Veronica (one year old) and Freed (10 months old) – and 18 loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings. R/V ANGARI departed West Palm Beach to participate in her first sea turtle release expedition, and went in search for the optimal open ocean location to safely release the sea turtles. One by one each sea turtle was successfully and enthusiastically released.

EDUCATORS GET IN THE FIELD TO LEARN ABOUT LOCAL MARINE LIFE AND HABITATS

We partnered with Manatee Lagoon and Palm Beach County's Department of Environmental Resources Management to host an immersive Educator Workshop on marine research and conservation around the Lake Worth Lagoon this summer. We had an awe-inspiring week, sharing our local urban estuary and its inhabitants with 31 educators.

Thank you Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back grant program for supporting Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks expedition experiences onboard R/V ANGARI for these educators!
