USING ARCGIS TO SHARE LAGOON DRIFT DATA

South Florida GIS Expo ANGARI Presentation

In August our Community Outreach Programs and Education Manager Laura Jessop attended the South Florida GIS Expo where she presented our citizen science study Lagoon Drift. She was also excited to talk about how we are using the data mapping software ArcGIS Online to share and analyze the Lagoon Drift data we collect during each experiment. This new Lagoon Drift dashboard will be made publicly available next month, so stay tuned! During the conference, Laura greatly enjoyed meeting new colleagues and learning about how others are incorporating GIS into their work.

OUR PRESIDENT JOINS FIU GRAD STUDENTS AT SHARKCON 2025

ANGARI President Angela Rosenberg joined Florida International University Ph.D. students Will Sample and Sophia Hemsi on stage at SharkCon 2025 to share our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program. Following the presentation, the panelists continued the conversation in a Q&A breakout session where they answered questions about graduate school, fieldwork and their journeys to becoming scientists and nonprofit leaders.

A SUCCESSFUL SEMESTER OF COE: SHARKS EXPEDITIONS GETS UNDERWAY

We have had a busy start to the fall semester with our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program with five student expeditions so far! Recently, we also celebrated our 50th COE: Sharks expedition onboard R/V ANGARI!

This September, in partnership with scientist from Florida International University, we have involved 54 students and 11 educators in hands-on shark research. We want to thank the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back grant program, Kenneth S. Morton and West Palm 100 for supporting many of these impactful opportunities for Palm Beach County students and educators.

Visit the COE webpage to apply for upcoming semesters and to learn more about our expeditions. Stay tuned for updates from our October expeditions!

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS RECEIVE TRAINING IN FIELD METHODS ONBOARD R/V ANGARI

Exp106_3

Scientists from Florida International University’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education joined the ANGARI crew onboard R/V ANGARI to learn and further develop their shark research and fieldwork skills. During the expedition, students received training to work with two types of specialized research equipment: drumlines, which are specialized gear used to fish for sharks for research purposes, and a baited remote underwater video system (BRUVS), which is used to capture underwater footage of marine life.

Many of the students will be members of future COE: Sharks research teams, and ANGARI Foundation is thrilled to be able to provide this unique training opportunity to graduate and undergraduate students.

MACARTHUR BEACH SEA TURTLES RELEASED

At the end of July, two juvenile loggerhead sea turtles were successfully released into the ocean by the Florida Park Service and Friends of John D. MacArthur Beach State Park from R/V ANGARI.

During the expedition, an additional 17 loggerhead hatchlings and 1 leatherback hatchling were released into Sargassum offshore Palm Beach. Visit the expedition webpage or press release to learn more.

EXCITING DAY OF SHARK RESEARCH ON THIS SUMMER'S SPONSORS AND DONORS EXPEDITION

EXP104_7

The ANGARI Foundation Board of Directors welcomed sponsors and donors aboard R/V ANGARI for a hands-on Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks (COE:Sharks) expedition to work alongside scientists from Florida International University’s College of Arts, Sciences and Education (FIU). The ANGARI crew and FIU scientists led the guests through a day in the life of a COE: Sharks student, including deploying and recovering drumlines and helping workup any sharks caught during the day.

This exciting expedition included working up eight sharks of three different species. ANGARI would like to thank all of the participants for their enthusiasm for our mission and ongoing support of our impactful programs.

SHARING SHARK SCIENCE WITH PALM BEACH COUNTY STUDENTS

To start the school year, our COE lead scientist Will Sample of Florida International University presented to over 2,200 students and educators from seven Palm Beach County schools, including Independence Middle School, Palm Beach Central High School, Conniston Community Middle School, Palm Springs Community Middle School, Jupiter Community High School, The Benjamin School and Lake Worth Community Middle School!

During the visits, Will shared the shark research occurring onboard R/V ANGARI as part of our COE: Sharks program, as well as his own ongoing research in the Everglades. A special thank you to the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back grant program, Kenneth S. Morton and West Palm 100 for supporting some of these amazing school visits!

EXPLORING MARINE RESOURCES WITH FL EDUCATORS

IMG_7460

In July, we hosted a four day Educator Workshop on marine science research and conservation around the Lake Worth Lagoon with Friends of MacArthur Beach State Park, Manatee Lagoon and Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management. Highlights included two days onboard R/V ANGARI where educators engaged in Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks research with FIU.

Our sincerest thanks goes to the Palm Beach International Boat Show Gives Back grant program for supporting ANGARI's contributions to this workshop!

OUR BUSY FALL SEMESTER OF OUTREACH HAS BEGUN

To start the fall semester, we attended multiple back-to-school outreach events.

We loved sharing our programs with educators, and our Community Outreach Programs and Education Manager Laura Jessop led a workshop session on our citizen science study Lagoon Drift with a group of enthusiastic educators.

Our community outreach this fall is just getting started, and we hope to see you at some of our upcoming outreach events, including the Indian River Lagoon Science Festival on October 25th and LagoonFest on November 1st!
