R/V ANGARI SURPASSES 70 EXPEDITIONS

RV ANGARI in Atlantic Ocean

The ANGARI crew and research vessel are in full swing this year as we surpassed our 70th expedition earlier this month!

Just this year, our research expeditions have taken us around the state of Florida, from Miami to Key West to Tampa, and internationally in support of coral reef research, oceanographic surveying and sampling, Sargassum work, shark studies and more. Additionally, our continued efforts to educate and share hands-on science with youth is growing, and we're excited to include students on many of our local expeditions through our collaborative educational programs. You can learn more about all of our expeditions on our website.

EDUCATORS EXPLORE SHARK RESEARCH OFF PBC

Teacher throwing drumline float from R/V ANGARI during a Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks expedition.

In July, we welcomed aboard 13 formal and informal educators for a Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks educator-only expedition. While the majority of those participating were Palm Beach County teachers, others joined from Pasco, Seminole and St. Lucie Counties in Florida, and even Massachusetts.

Participating educators learned about the nature of science and fieldwork while working with ANGARI crew and our Florida International University partner scientists to study sharks in Palm Beach County coastal waters. The activities of the day helped to build a community of learning, as did discussions of resources and experiences teachers are able share with their students. We look forward to seeing how the day translates to their classrooms, and thank the Great Charity Challenge for supporting this expedition!

STUDENTS BECOME SCIENTISTS ONBOARD R/V ANGARI

We had an exciting September chock-full of Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks student expeditions!

Our hands-on ocean science experiences got underway Sept. 11th with Independence Middle School's SciQuest Academy on Exp 70, and we headed back out for Exp 71 with Jupiter Community High School’s Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. Students and teachers worked alongside FIU shark scientists to employ methods like drumline fishing and baited remote underwater video surveys to study local marine life.

Our gratitude goes to the SciQuest Academy sponsors and generous donors of ANGARI Foundation for supporting Expeditions 70 and 71, respectively, and a special thank you to the Flotilla Club for their in-kind support of the program!

JOIN US FOR FALL OCEAN EXPERT EXCHANGE

Ocean Expert Exchange graphic for Fall 2023 webinars on sharks and Sargassum.

Our collaboration with University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute continues as we kick off another exciting series of live marine science webinars!

Two events remain in the fall lineup. On October 26th we will learn about the role of sharks in the food web from Sara Casareto of Florida International University, and on November 30th we'll explore the secrets of Sargassum with Dr. Brian Lapointe of Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University. We hope to see you there - learn more and register today!

GEARING UP FOR A SCIENCE-FILLED SCHOOL YEAR WITH FLORIDA TEACHERS

We were out and about in August sharing our marine science education offerings at back-to-school programs. We were stoked to participate in the School District of Palm Beach County's Secondary Math, Science & STEM event again. One of our FIU partner scientists Dr. Mike Heithaus even gave the keynote address to kick off the new school year!

We were also excited to participate for the first time in the Broward County Public School's STEM+CS Teacher Resource Fair and loved getting to engage with so many new educators!

RECENT GRADUATE BEGINS ANGARI FALL INTERNSHIP

Martinna with camera onboard RV ANGARI

Martinna Parham has joined the ANGARI team for her postgraduate internship.

Martinna graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology from Hawaii Pacific University, and in 2023 earned her MPS in Marine Conservation from University of Miami RSMAS.

Originally from Silver Spring, Maryland, Martinna loves to learn, especially about the ocean and the marine life that inhabit it. Her previous experiences include working with CREMA in Costa Rica as a sea turtle assistant and the Archipelagos Institute of Conservation where she focused on photo-identification of Mediterranean dolphin populations.

At ANGARI Martinna is contributing to our STEM education and citizen science programs. Martinna's full bio is on our intern page.

SPRING 2024 INTERN APPLICATIONS DUE DEC. 1ST

Our 4-month paid internships are for college students and recent graduates who are passionate about marine science research and education. Interns receive hands-on experience in youth STEM education, citizen science, community outreach, research vessel operations, digital media & marketing, science communications, photography, filmmaking and/or nonprofit and business administration.
