We're thrilled to announce that education opportunities onboard R/V ANGARI are back! Better still, we've teamed up with scientists from Florida International University to offer teachers and students the unique opportunity to participate in shark research via our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program. Departing from our home port in West Palm Beach, FL, COE: Sharks expeditions enable youth and educators to gain hands-on experience with scientific field methods while working side-by-side with FIU scientists to fish for, tag and collect data in support of shark research and conservation. We are currently accepting applications for a teacher-only workshop this summer, as well as student expeditions during the 2022-2023 school year, so get your submissions in ASAP!
There's a variety of exciting offerings, from plenary speakers and concurrent sessions, to exhibitors, networking, fieldtrips and more focused on the Charting the Course with Perseverance theme. If attending, be sure to check out our talk on Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks @ 4 PM on July 10 in 127 West!
ONGOING LAGOON DRIFT CITIZEN SCIENCE STUDY
We're in the midst of the 7th Lake Worth Lagoon Drift citizen science experiment to help us understand water and pollutant motion in our area. On May 27th, 240 eco-friendly drift cards were released from six Palm Beach County sites and >25% have already been recovered...
Thank you to the Eco Scouts and our partners at Manatee Lagoon and Friends of Manatee Lagoon for aiding us in drift card decorating and deployment! Please keep an eye out, and contact us if you and your students would like to participate in a future drift experiment.
OCEAN EXPERT EXCHANGE WEBINARS CONTINUE
Our spring Ocean Expert Exchange series with UF TESI's Scientist in Every Florida School welcomed inquisitive audiences from around the world.
Did you miss a live webinar? We've got you covered! Recordings and educational resources are available via our program page. And if you're planning ahead, we've already set the dates for our fall series so mark your calendars and stay tuned for speaker and topic announcements.
SPLASH BACK TO SPRING 2022
We had a fantastic semester of both virtual and in-person educational programming, including Coastal Ocean Explorers school visits and expeditions, Earth Day events, Lagoon Drift education sessions and more. We've already kicked off a packed agenda of summer learning programs and are looking forward to even more in the months to come!
TRI-LINGUAL EARTH DAY COLORING BOOK RELEASED
We're excited to once again be featured in Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens' Earth Day Coloring Book in partnership with Florida Crystals, Florida Power & Light and Lewis Longman & Walker PA.
This year's theme was Invest in Our Planet. The book highlights the work and imagery of numerous local environmental organizations, and includes captions in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole. Copies were distributed to Palm Beach County elementary schools, but you can download a PDF for printing here.
MEET SKYE, THE GIANT MANTA RAY
Working with collaborators at Digital Life and the The Florida Manta Project at the Marine Megafauna Foundation, we have created an accurate 3D model of a giant manta ray. Skye is a friendly local favorite juvenile manta, and we are pleased to be able to share him with all!
The model, including swimming and feeding animations, is freely available for viewing and 3D printing via SketchFab. Learn more by examining the model, watching our 'making of' video and exploring related resources on our site.
